The most obvious difference between the two is that the body of the YCL450 is produced entirely from solid grenadilla wood which produces a wonderful, resonant sound quality - it is the sort of sound you can only really get from a wooden instrument and as the first model in the Yamaha line-up to be made in this way it is a well regarded upgrade instrument.High quality constructionThe instrument benefits from silver plated key-work. This makes it less slippery than the nickel used on cheaper instruments. It also makes them hard-wearing and less prone to bends. The 450 was conceived as an instrument suitable for a learner, but one that they would continue playing further into their musical journey.Encouraging and smooth to play for learnersThe 17 silver-plated keys are supported by blue steel springs, which provide a lighter touch and which produce a smooth, quick action. The clarinet also has straight tone holes with a tapered undercut which provides less resistance and helps with tone quality and intonation. In other words, it helps to produce a clear and stable sound as well as reducing squeaking. Finally, it has a wonderfully light yet solid action which incorporate leather pads, allowing for security when it comes to air flow.
